Meet Our Canine Team Champ, Dexter, Jax and Bengie are the stars of M&M’s canine team. These bed bug sniffing dogs have been trained since adoption from a humane shelter and certified exclusively in the detection of live bed bugs and viable bed bug eggs. They work diligently with their handlers — all of whom were trained specifically in this trade as well — to sniff out bed bugs all over the greater NYC area and beyond. NESDCA Certified All four of M&M’s bed bug-detecting canines were rescued from shelters as puppies and brought in to the Florida training center where they each spent nine intensive months at work, fulfilling the requirements for certification that were laid out by The National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association. This esteemed third party organization presents the industry-standard when it comes to live bed bugs and viable egg scent detection. Originally created by pest control professionals who came together to ensure that the highest standards for entomology scent detection would be laid out, enforced, and upheld. On the NESDCA website, you’ll find a list of certified teams where Dexter, Jax and all of their handlers are included. How Do They Work? Becoming a canine detective is not easy! Our dogs spent nine months each being trained and tested at a Florida school that was given a “Gold Standard” in the entomology canine detection field. This school was also hailed as the only program in the world with “scientifically proven results.” Similar to the training of dogs for bombs or drug detection, these canines were trained and tested routinely, multiple times per day, with the main goal being to provide conditioning while confirming their ability to detect live bed bugs and viable bed bug eggs. How Effective Are Canines? According to a study completed by the University of Florida, scent detecting canines have proven to be 98% effective in this type of detection. You can read more on this study HERE. In this study we learn that, “Detector dogs are useful for locating bed bugs because they use olfaction rather than vision. Dogs were trained to detect the bed bug (as few as one adult male or female) and viable bed bug eggs (five, collected 5-6 days after feeding) by using a modified food and verbal reward system.” Why Should I Consider Hiring a Canine? Waking up with bites would be the first sign that you might have bed bugs. If this begins to happen on a frequent occasion, and you are unable to find any live bed bugs yourself, it might be time to consider bringing in a NESDCA certified bed bug detecting canine. We are also happy to customize proactive inspection schedules for your property, whether on a one time, as needed, or a recurring basis. Working with both private home renters or owners and also people in the commercial sector, like property managers, business owners, and moving companies, we will proactively inspect your premises and be happy to provide you with documentation, declaring that you have made every effort possible to ensure that your property is being kept to the highest of standards, and is entirely free of bed bugs.
