I’ve been doing a lot of reading and research on these 3rd party bed bug dog certification companies. IBBMA seems to be the only one of the 3 that is not connected with dog sales. The trainers on the NESDCA list and the WDDO list are the larger operations that sell detector dogs. Somehow that just doesn’t seem right to me…Over the years I have worked in agencies that trained and certified law enforcement K-9’s, all but 1 were detector dogs. I’ve since bought a rescue from a local dog pound and trained her in bed bug detection. She has about 130 hours of training in her now and I will be testing our team with IBBMA first…and that whole 800 to 1000 hours of training just doesn’t cut it. If you look at the age of the dogs that are for sale, the math doesn’t cut it either…way too many hours per day for a 2-3 year old dog for the math to even begin to work.

Charles 1 year ago Subject: Bed Bug Extermination That is a quite informative post regarding bed bug extermination. As the post says, bed bug control should start with DIY methods to eliminate initially found infestation by using alcohol and washing clothes in warm water. Then we should ask a professional bed bugs exterminator for a thorough inspection of every corner of our house. And in case further infestation is detected, we should treat the house immediately with the help of a professional. This is the right procedure for the treatment of bed bugs. replyto Charles

Picking the right dog is crucial. There are hundreds of companies out on the market today advertising they have certified bed bug dogs, but certified through whom? Most training facilities create their own certifications for the dogs, meaning every dog that is trained gets certified. Do your research first. NESDCA is a third party bed bug detection certification organization that certifies the best of the best in k9 scent detection. Quite frankly, if you are not getting a NESDCA dog, then you just simply are not getting the best, and in the matter of bed bugs, you want the best.

It's very common for someone to be bitten by bed bugs, but have no physical signs of such, such as red bumps similar to bites from mosquito's. Usually when a bump occurs due to a bite it is due to an allergic reaction with the bug(bite). Bed bugs are small bugs usually smaller than the tip of your pinky. They start very small, almost unnotticable unless you look closely and are a clear to nude shade, red butts if they've fed recently. Older bed bugs are a brown or dark red and change shape depending on how much they're fed recently. If you're suspecting that you might have bed bugs locate an exterminator who is specialized in bed bug removal or has years of experience in such, to enspect your home. There are a few places that will provide an inspection for free or for a low cost. Coming from my own experience with dealing with bed bugs, it is most definitely better to hire an exterminator who knows what they're doing than to attempt to deal with them yourself. Hope this is helpful. And good luck 🙂

I recently had a customer go through the exact same thing as you. She had 4 pest management companies come in and none of them found a single bug. She then called us in and we had two alerts on each side of her mattress. I wrote in my report that the dog alerted to both sides of the bed and was also trying to crawl under the mattress. So I suggested that if her pest control company wanted to find them then I suggest looking on the mattress and look under the bed. Customer called me back 2 days later crying saying that the pest control company did not find anything at all. Her husband was calling it a scam as well. I asked if the pest control company completely searched the bed and box springs. She said yes. I asked how and she told me they had flash lights out looking all around the bed. When I asked if they took the fabric off the bottom of the box spring she replied NO. I suggested to look there, as I stated before the dog was trying to crawl under the bed. She called me back 30 minutes later again in tears apologizing to me stating that she found the evidence she was looking for. At last, they identified bed bugs.
Bed bugs are small and very difficult to spot. In addition, they resemble many other species of household insect. One of the quickest ways to identify bed bugs is to check for rashes or other skin reactions in the morning. Also, check your headboard, mattress, and linens when changing sheets for any bugs or tiny black spots of dried blood. If you spot any bug that resembles a bed bug or identify signs a bed bug has been feeding, it is best to call a professional exterminator to inspect your home.
Okay, the bed bug dog guy, dog, and I go back to the bedrooms to hone in on the exact spots the dog reacted to. This way I can find out where I need to treat the infestation. The doggy is good and shows me the spot again. I look at the box spring and then at the guy and dog and say “Uh, okay- umm can we see them… or like one” ? the guy tries to find one for me but goes on to say “how hard it is to find these little suckers” and “gosh they are just so sneaky”. Ughhh. My hope of the beginning of the end of bed bugs has quickly been deflated.. All I can think to my self is what an crazy, gullible idiot I have turned into in a mere 2 weeks. I will not even say how much money I spent on this. It is shameful…
My heart goes out to everyone who is suffering. I just recently accepted a position as a dog handler. The dog is a bed bug detection canine. I have been in the position for about the last 3 weeks, since September 16, 2010. I have learned a lot and am anxious to learn more. My company is dedicated to becoming part of the solution to the growing bed bug epidemic in the greater Seattle area.
Okay, so I hired this company with hounds that only can identify the scent of bed bug. Scam? who knows? I certainly didn’t care because I was/ am so desperate to get these things out of my house! So here is what happened. Yesterday the man with the dog came over to my home. The dog goes up to the beds in my house and apparently really reacts to something on both the bed in my master bedroom and the bed in my guest-room. You can’t imagine how excited I am that I am THIS close to hard evidence of real, live, disgusting, blood sucking bed bugs! I am this close to a solution!
During our bed bug inspections, we transmit immediate, real-time data providing the exact location of any “finds” to the facility. At the end of our inspection, we provide a certificate stating that the property has been screened for bed bugs by a certified bed bug dog.

Hi. I am a pest control technician that often deal with bed bugs. I will give you some info on how to deal with these nuisance. First you will want to check all your furniture, mattress, ceiling edges, baseboards, etc. Check for any black dots as these are droppings and you will want to treat wherever they may be. They will most likely be located wherever the host is but in some cases(severe infestation or when tenants using sprays that repel the bed bugs), they can be on furniture, on the ceiling, inside outlets , bed frames , under baseboard moldings, kids toys, drawer, etc. First of all, you will want to buy products that are most effective against bed bugs. There is a product called bedlam, it come in a aerosol can. You will want to spray this alongside seams of your mattress, your frame , alongside baseboards, and whereever you suspect them. For outlets and a for a longer residual, you will want to also get a product with silica gel or diatomaceous earth. This comes in a dust form so you will also need a duster. Put the dust in cracks and crevices especially outlets and frame. Wash your clothes and any blankets, sheets pillow casings in hot water and dry in hot temperature. You can also steam alongside the mattress edges to kill any eggs. Make sure you move at a slow pace because it takes only 5-10 sec in temp above 135 to kill but if temp is 110-120 it will take a while longer. A typical bed bug treatment will cost anywhere between 150-1000 depending on type of treatment, the pest control company, and severity of infestation. If you happen to rather choose a pest control company, don't use the big companies because I know all of the technicians are not reliable. If anything go on yelp and find a local company that has a good track record.
